Year 1 Phonics Screening Check
Phonics Screening Check
A statutory Phonics Screening Check takes place in the Summer Term (June) of Year One. This is carried out on a one-to-one basis with the class teacher and is used to ensure that children are making sufficient progress with their phonics skills to read words at an age-appropriate level. When pupils pass this check, it indicates that they are on track to become fluent readers who can enjoy reading for pleasure and for learning.
Pupils who do not pass the check in Year One will receive further support and intervention to close any gaps. A further opportunity to pass the check is given the following year, in the Summer Term of Year 2. In the event that a pupil is unable to pass the screening check after two attempts, specific areas of difficulty would be identified and pupils would continue to receive support in reading as they move into Year Three and beyond.
