Educational research has proven that reading with, and to, your child even when they are in Key Stage Two, is incredibly beneficial both in terms of accelerating their reading, knowledge, vocabulary and writing as well as boosting their overall capacity for learning and future brain growth. Therefore, we ask for you to support our work in school by hearing your child read at least five times a week and sign/ comment in their reading diary so that this is recorded, enabling your child to partake in the school reward system resulting in lots of house points!
Reading diaries will be checked to ensure that children are reading at home and changing their reading books on a regular basis.
Children achieving the target of five reads per week will be directed to homework club where they will be supported to reach this goal.
Book Banded Book
All children are allocated a book banded reading book which should be used as a tool to practise the reading skills taught in school. Reading and discussion about the text is crucial in order to develop fluency and accuracy.
Breadth and Depth
Alongside the book banded reading book allocated to your child, it is crucial that they access a broad range of enjoyable texts that develop their love of reading.
We therefore encourage children to read their own books from home, visit the library and access a wide variety of authors and genres.
