Abbey Primary School

A caring, sharing, achieving school, putting the child at the heart of everything we do.

Reading Homework

Please support our work in school by hearing your child read at least five times a week. Please sign/ comment in their reading diary so that this is recorded, enabling your child to partake in the school reward system resulting in lots of house points!

Reading diaries will be checked to ensure that children are reading at home. Staff will also hear your child read weekly. This is when your child's Book Banded book will be changed.

Book Banded Book

All children are allocated a book banded reading book which should be used as a tool to practise the phonics and sight reading skills taught in school. Please ensure that your child reads this book regularly.

Breadth and Depth

Alongside the book banded reading book allocated to your child, it is crucial that they access a broad range of enjoyable texts that develop their love of reading.

We therefore encourage children to read their own books from home, visit the library and access a wide variety of picture books.

Key Word Cards

These words will be read with your child regularly in class. Once they can read the words on their card immediately by sight, without sounding out, they will be moved onto the next one. There is a display in class whereby children move their photographs along as they progress through the words. These are tested each week when your child reads 1:1 to a member of staff.
