Trip to Parliament
Some of the year 5 children had the opportunity to visit Parliament this term.
This afternoon, we have been putting our coding skills to the test by programming a drone to collect presents for The Grinch to return to Whoville! We have used our logical reasoning to explain why certain algorithms won't work and attempting to debug them!
Here is the link if you want to try at home!
This week, we have been learning about Christianity and Islam and comparing the beliefs of Christian and Muslim people. We re-created a poster in groups about Christian beliefs, with a particular focus on Jesus. We sent 1 person from each group at a time to try and remember as much information as they could to then transfer to our own poster. At the end, we counted how many facts we'd found and totted up the score! Later on in the week, we focused on The Ten Commandments and The Five Pillars of Islam.
We kick-started our topic by using the library and iPads to research key facts about: Gods and Goddesses, Egyptian Hierarchy, Daily Life in Ancient Egypt and the River Nile.
On Friday, Abbey held a World War One Memorial Day where each class focused on a different aspect of the war. Year Five had the theme of 'Land, Sea and Sky'. We learned about land, sea and sky battle and produced a quality, multimedia piece of artwork incorporating sketching, photographs, paint and silhouettes. Take a look at our pictures to find out what we did!
Firstly, we worked in small groups to recreate the way the Moon orbits the Earth and Earth orbits the Sun. We learned about the phases of the moon, the different shapes of the moon and how, what part of the moon we see, is dependent on where the moon is when orbiting Earth. The best part was recreating the phases of the moons with Oreos!
Year Five investigated this using footballs and toy boats! Take a look...
Year Five had the exciting opportunity to learn about outer-space with a visit from Mr Morton and his huge planetarium! It was magical... take a look!
Throughout the day, we moved around classes to refine our Learning to Learn Skills: Conduct, Communication, Thirst for Learning, Perseverance and Resilience, Co-operation, Independence and Respect.
Here we are putting our Indepence skills to the test...
Here we are completing lots of different (exciting!) activities...
